Suggested High Holy Day Reading

The following books may be of great spiritual depth, and possible guides through this season.
  • "Days of Awe" by Agnon, the Israeli Nobel Laureate.  It is a stunning collection of wisdom on the themes of Repentance and Turning culled from every period of Jewish learning.
  • "Entering the High Holydays" by Rabbi Dr. Reuven Hammer (Jewish Publication Society).  A guide to the services and themes of the High Holydays by the past president of the (Conservative) Rabbinical Assembly and a professor at the Schecter Institute in Jerusalem.
  • "60 Days" by Rabbi Simon Jacobson.  A spiritual guide to each of the 60 days between Shavuot and Sukkot.  Available from Meaningful Life Center.  Provides a great gift of combining insight from the kabbalistic and Hassidic traditions with an understanding of the spiritual quest of modernity
  • "This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared" - by Rabbi Alan Lew, published by Time Warner.  An eclectic but profound approach to the themes of repentance, turning and prayer.

Interfaith Families
  • "All You Want to Know About Sabbath: A Guide for the Perplexed" by Barth, Rabbi Samuel, and Dick Codor, illustrator, Behrman House, 1995.   This is a humorous pamphlet illustrating what to expect at a Sabbath service.  It is a great introduction for people who have never been to a Jewish service.
  • "Mixed Blessings:  Overcoming the Stumbling Blocks in an Interfaith Marriage" by Cowan, Paul and Rachel Cowan,  Penguin Books, Reprint edition, 1989.  This is one of the early and great reflective pieces of writing on mixed faith relationships.
  • "The Way into Jewish Prayer" by Hoffman, Rabbi Lawrence A., Jewish Lights Publishing, 2000.  One of  the best introductions to Jewish prayer.  Written as a completely introductory text – a little humor, a little spirituality.
  • "122 Clues for Jews Whose Children Intermarry"  by Jacobs, Sidney J. and Betty J. Jacobs, Jacobs Ladder Publications, 1988.  This book uses sensitivity and humor to cover such topics as why a Jewish adult would intermarry, the wedding ceremony, how to deal with holidays, anti-Semitic in-laws, and whether the grandchildren will be Jewish.
  • "Jewish Spirituality, A Brief Introduction for Christians" by Kushner, Rabbi Lawrence, Jewish Lights Publishing, 2001.  This book provides a readable comparison of Jewish and Christian beliefs and goes on to explain Jewish views on spirituality.  Kushner’s use of stories to explain his points makes the book an enjoyable text for both Christians and Jews.
  • "Mingled Roots:  A Guide for Jewish Grandparents of Interfaith Grandchildren"  by Levin, Sunie and Dahlia Schoenberg, UAHC Press, Revised Edition, 2003.  Mingled Roots serves as a manual for grandparents in how to transmit Jewish religion and culture to grandchildren while respecting the religious wishes of the parents.
  • "How to Be a  Perfect Stranger:  The Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook" by Stuart M. Matlins and Arthur J. Magida, Skylight Paths Publishing (3rd edition), 2002.  This is a guide to etiquette in other people’s religious ceremonies.
