Adult Education

It is the goal of Jewish Adult Learning (JAL) at CAA to provide experiences that enrich an individual's knowledge of Judaism and how that knowledge relates to building a deeper understanding of Jewish life in society.  The Jewish Adult Learning program at CAA offers and sponsors various educational opportunities not only to CAA members but also to the community at large in order to foster and encourage shared experience and discussion.  The Austin adult Jewish community is diverse and has many different learning styles and scheduling requirements.  We have assembled various programming opportunities which include not only JAL but also Thinking Adults Program (TAP) and TAP2.

Kollel Chadash

A new community of Adult Jewish Learning begins this month at Agudas Achim. A “Kollel” is a traditional place of   Jewish learning in which students gather in the evening to learn traditional texts and philosophy. Our new version will expand this concept and appeal to a variety of learners. We hope to strengthen and expand our group of learners to develop a regular practice of Jewish study.

Wednesday is our night. We will begin at 6 PM with minyan in the chapel and proceed to classes beginning at 6:30 PM. Two class periods will be held each evening.

Learners may enroll in 1 or 2 classes. At the conclusion of the evening (8:15) we will gather in the chapel for a special “D’var” or word of Torah offered by one of our teachers. Our program will conclude at 8:30.

Session 3—Beginning April 14

Searching Jewish Values and Acts of Kindness
Dr. Harvey Raben, 6:30-7:20pm
In the Jewish morning prayer service there is a Talmudic passage that one should recite and that some refer to as the Rabbi’s 10 commandments.  This passage will form the basis of a discussion and text study on how we can apply these values in our lives. Combining traditional and contemporary thought how can be take the words from the page and make them actions in our lives. Taught by

Mussar Group to begin at CAA
An introduction to Mussar and a learning group to be formed at CAA will occur after Shabbat Kiddush, April 3rd in the History Room. Those with an interest in learning more about this initiative should join Bobbie Neyman , facilitator at that time.

Musar is a Jewish practice for self-improvement which focuses on a more conscientious life and heightening awareness of the world and one’s responsibilities.  In short – becoming more of a Mensch, Musar aims to help us become more holy and whole.

The program is designed for a small group where participants can express themselves in response to their own life experience in a context of Jewish wisdom.  In order to do this, certain practical tools are learned practically.

Community-wide Adult Learning Opportunities

Sulam (Hebrew for "ladder") is a multi-denominational Jewish collaboration among synagogues and agencies in Austin, joining together in the spirit of enhancing Jewish learning opportunities for adults in the greater Austin area. Sulam's aim is to provide the Austin community with innovative, high quality adult Jewish learning programs. Every partner has committed to host classes, have representation on the Sulam committee, and provide publicity. Sulam is a new and unique model for community partnership and organization around adult Jewish education. We are pleased to introduce the first catalog of courses being offered as part of the Sulam collaborative. Pirke Avot (1:6) teaches, "Make for yourself a teacher and acquire for yourself a friend." Through the Sulam initiative, you can learn about your heritage and connect with your community.

The JCAA has worked with our Austin Jewish organizations to provide community-wide adult learning opportunities. Sulam is a new adult learning collaborative in which the constituent organizations open their doors to the entire Austin community for adult learning. Please check out the updated course listings.
